Irrigation Efficiency: Save Water, Fertilizer & Money Workshop
Wednesday, June 16, 9am-12pm
Registration: $75 before June 11, $105 after June 11
Knowledge leaders: Stephanie Burnett, John Lea-Cox, Youbin Zheng
Watering wisely conserves water, minimizes crop losses caused by over-watering and pathogens, and reduces fertilizer use. See a demonstration of the newest wireless, sensor-based techniques that allow you to reduce water applied by up to 50 percent. Practical approaches will be shared that will take your irrigation to the next level!
A Guide to Sustainable Crop Production
Thursday, June 19, 1pm - 4pm
Registration: $75 before June 9, $105 after June 11
Knowledge leaders: Stephanie Burnett, Brian Krug, Roberto Lopez, and Neil Mattson
This workshop will focus on the sustainable management for three critical production inputs: nutrition and water, the environment, and plant height management.
• Sustainably managing nutrition and water will allow you to reduce consumption and ultimately prevent nutrient runoff. Learn about automated irrigation and fertilization scheduling, managing fertility with sub-irrigation, the use of technologically-advanced controlled release fertilizers in the greenhouse, and techniques to minimize leaching.
• Accurate monitoring and control of the greenhouse environment allows you to reduce energy consumption and shrinkage. Discuss the latest temperature, light, and CO2 sensors that will allow you to grow your crops more efficiently. Do you know what your light levels are in propagation? You'll learn how light can make all the difference when growing greenhouse crops. Get tips for manipulating temperature for sustainable crop growth.
• There are many chemical and non-chemical ways to keep plant height in check. Hear the latest research results to highlight some of these cultural practices, including new low dose PGR application methods, low phosphorus fertility, water stress, temperature, and light control. You’ll come away with a sustainable PGR tool box. .
Hands-On Workshop: Disease Identification
Thursday, June 17, 7:30-10am
Registration: $95 before June 9, $125 after June 11
Knowledge leaders: Steve Jeffers, Margaret Williamson, Alan Windham
In this workshop, you will be immersed into the world of plant disease diagnosis. Working with a partner, you will learn tricks and tips for identifying diseases of floral crops with a microscope and quick kits for virus testing. Guided by experienced plant disease experts, you will gain an appreciation for the art and science of recognizing the signs and symptoms associated with common floral diseases. This session is eligible for pesticide recertification credit.
Hands-On Workshop: Insect Identification
Thursday, June 17, 4-6:30pm
Registration: $95 before June 9, $125 after June 11
Knowledge leaders: Juang Horng Chong, Steven Frank, Ron Oetting
This workshop is strictly a lets-get-down-to-basics hands-on session in which you will be able to look at specimens of major greenhouse insect and mite pests. There will be microscopes and hand lenses to study the characteristics of all the major groups of pests. The emphasis will be identification and biology, but you will also have an opportunity to visit with the experts about your own situation. This session is eligible for pesticide recertification credit.
